|Hailsham Swimming Club is a friendly, family orientated club serving Hailsham and its surrounding area. Formed in 1989, and is still going strong to this day, providing a safe environment in which the teachers can develop the swimmers up to a competitive standard.
At Hailsham Swimming Club we continually develop teaching and coaching skills, providing swimmers of all abilities the opportunity to compete or undertake swimming as a sociable leisure activity, within a friendly club.
Hailsham Swimming Club aims to become a top competitive squad within the County, providing opportunities for all our swimmers to excel at County, Regional and National level.
Hailsham’s Performance Squad competed against the top swimmers from across the county, at the recent Sussex County Championships, held at the K2 Leisure Centre in Crawley. The team collectively came away with a total of 46 medals, and 11 Championship titles.
Tom Barden (12) put in some superb performances across all racing strokes to claim six championship titles, which saw him crowned the 12 years age group winner. Tom completely blew away the competition in the 100m Butterfly event. He finished five seconds ahead of the field and recorded an amazing race time of 1.13.16, which is well within the Regional level qualification. Tom also secured silver medals in a further five races, and reached all of the finals for his age group.
Hailsham were well represented in the girls 12 years age group, with three swimmers finishing within the top eight: Milly Widdop 3rd, Maisie Thornton 5th and Maezie Lane 8th. Milly Widdop’s determination shone throughout these championships, as she also qualified for all event finals for her age. Brilliant Butterfly swims in the 100m and 50m distances gained her well-deserved gold medals and improved race times. Milly also collected a total of seven silver and three bronze medals, across a variety of strokes.
This was Maisie Thornton’s first experience of county level competition and she more then held her own. An awesome 200m Butterfly swim, in a six second personal best time, saw her finish in silver medal position.
Maddie Drury (16) made her mark in the 400m Freestyle event, winning the Junior Championship title, as well claiming bronze medals in the 16 years and over age group category and the Open Championship. A strong 200m Butterfly race secured her a silver medal in her age group and a bronze in the Junior Championship. Maddie also qualified for the Open 200m Freestyle event final, in which she sprinted to a bronze medal finish.
Congratulations to all of the other Hailsham medalists: Thomas Jackson (1 Silver, 2 Bronze), Ben Kebbell (1 Silver, 2 Bronze), Frankie Lee (1 Silver, 1 Bronze), and Craig Steenhoff (2 Silver, 1 Bronze).
Head Coach Craig Steenhoff commented “We had so many finalists and top eight positions in events, which was great to see. Hailsham were 7th best club overall in age group and championship points. Well done everyone!”
